The Capacitor Problem: Why Old Gear Changes Over Time

Electrolytic capacitors are consumable parts. Their materials age, their electrical characteristics drift, and heat makes that process worse. In older audio gear, that can affect the power supply, protection circuits, coupling stages, and other parts of the signal path.

The symptoms are not always dramatic. A unit may hum, lose a channel, trip protection, become unstable, or simply stop behaving like it did when it was healthy. A slow change is still a failure pattern, even when nobody can point to the exact day the sound changed.

A full recap is not an automatic upgrade button. The correct parts depend on the circuit, the job they are doing, the available space, voltage and temperature requirements, and the condition of the rest of the unit. Replacing parts without understanding the circuit is another version of the parts cannon.
